Moonee Valley: Moir Stakes Night, 28 Sept 2018

Friday night is the traditional Victorian Public Holiday, marking the annual AFL Grand Final weekend. All eyes will be on Moonee Valley, as the Group 1 Moir Stakes is set to run as a prelude to The Everest. Other races include the Stutt Stakes, Stocks Stakes and the JRA Cup. It’s an 8 race card.

Moonee Valley Race 1
Distance: 1200m
Race Time: 6:30 PM

The two major chances appear to be the local Caulfield trained OCTANE and Sydney visitor SUNSET WATCH. The field is for three-year-olds, with many coming from outside the Metro Melbourne area for the first time. These two command the early betting. Two others with half decent form include DIVINE MR TYCOON and WALK THE TALK, a winner of its last two starts in lesser company. SKIDMAN was sent to Rosehill last weekend to race in a BM72 event but bombed out. Couldn’t have him here. RINGERDINGDING doesn’t have the form but is firming in the market at $5.50 SP.

BFF Picks: Octane, Sunset Watch, Divine Mr Tycoon

Moonee Valley Race 2
Distance: 1600m
Race Time: 7:00 PM

This is a race for the mares over a mile, in what is a small 7 horse field. The favourite will probably be I AM A STAR, a Group 1 winner in the 2016 Myer Classic. She’s a last start winner in what was an excellent hit-out in the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington, where she cleaned up many of her rivals who are lining up on Friday. Should be too good. SHEEZDASHING should prove worth competition, after a solid third in the Let’s Elope, plus she is Group 1 placed in both the South Australian and Queensland Oaks. Will be competitive.

After a decent Autumn which resulted in three seconds in Group 2 and Group 3 races in Melbourne, SAMOVARE has since gone off the boil. She’s due for a return in her new prep. Has good form over the distance and on the track, so is not completely out of it considering the small field. The Darren Weir trained mare MRS GARDENIA is well supported in the market, despite her unplaced effort in the Let’s Elope last start. Did win prior to that, so should be taken on trust.

BFF Picks: I Am A Star, Sheezdashing, Samovare

Moonee Valley Race 3
Distance: 2040m
Race Time: 7:30 PM

A few handy staying types line up in the JRA Cup. Despite not having the best form-line leading in, both HARLEM And THE TAJ MAHAL are quality gallopers who need to get some decent racing into them. Expect some improvement. The two horses who do have the form are Warrnambool galloper TRAP FOR FOOLS and Adelaide raider DOLLAR DOLLAR BILL. Both have won their last two starts and should be right on the money for punters.

BFF Picks: Trap For Fools, Dollar Dollar Bill, The Taj Mahal

Race 3 odds at Beteasy

Moonee Valley Race 4
Distance: 955m
Race Time: 8:00 PM

I expect top weight YOU’VE BEEN HAD to extend his profile, now 6 wins and placings from 8 starts. Has won on the track and looks like commanding favouritism. The exciting mare GOLDFYNCH comes down from Sydney with Deanne Panya aboard. Will likely set a merry chase, judging by what we’ve seen so far. One to watch. Cranbourne galloper AMADEUS returns fresh and would need to be on the bunny to be a chance. Another horse of interest is Kiwi mare DEEP EUPHORIA, whose form prior to her resumption was excellent. May find the 955m a bit short first up but has amassed some solid credentials. Keep a sneaky eye on her, Michael Walker to ride. Currently at 13.00 SP.

BFF Picks: You’ve Been Had, Goldfynch, Deep Euphoria

Moonee Valley Race 5
Distance: 1600m
Race Time: 8:45 PM

This is the Group 2 Stutt Stakes. The Weir galloper LEONARDO DA HINCI is commanding all the early money, and why not? Has great form leading in, running a last start second to the talented colt Brutal. That form-line says it all. FAROOQ is the Tony McEvoy galloper who bombed his last start (refer Brutal, Leonardo Da Hinci) but is much better than that. May appreciate the trip out to a mile this time around. The Lindsay Park youngster MUSWELLBROOK brings solid form into the race, but this will be a step up in class for him. OUTRAGEOUS is the Sydney visitor who has been racing well in Group 1 company and has picked up a third placing in the ATC Sire Produce behind El Dorado Dreaming and Oohood, albeit at 60/1 odds. Wouldn’t surprise if he won this.

BFF Picks: Leonardo Da Hinci, Muswellbrook, Outrageous.

Moonee Valley Race 6
Distance: 1200m
Race Time: 9:15 PM

Mostly this appears to be a fairly even race, with betting spread across many chances. The two picks gravitating like cream to the top are the promising duo of HUMMA HUMMA and GOLDEN HALO. The latter was scratched last week and lines up at The Valley instead. The former has two last start seconds, including one at The Valley. I’d put Humma Humma just slightly ahead. Michelle Payne’s filly SWEET ROCKETTE is a genuine chance too wasn’t helped by the firming conditions at Flemington two weeks back but will improve on that. Sydney visitor MERYL has place claims but would need to improve overall on her NSW form. ENBIHAAR is probably the class filly of the field. She only needs to be racing close to her Autumn form (2nd in Group 1 Blue Diamond, 1st in Blue Diamond Prelude (fillies) to be a factor in this race. I believe she will.

BFF Picks: Humma Humma, Enbihaar, Sweet Rockette

Moonee Valley Race 7
Distance: 1000m
Race Time: 9:45 PM

He’ll go out a raging hot favourite for this, and with The Everest only weeks away, all eyes will be on the Weir galloper NATURE STRIP. Can he be beaten? Certainly, Darren Weir has two other top contenders to rival his stable star. in BRAVE SMASH and VOODOO LAD. Both are class horses and should be figuring in the finish, though it must be said, both also have wide draws. Adelaide visitor VIDDORA is another class racehorse, who finished second to She Will Reign in this race last year and then landing a group 1 later in the season over in Perth. Has a huge finish on her. BALL OF MUSCLE, FAATINAH and HOUTZEN are all in good form, and any of those three could fill a place. Just depends on how the race pans out, but Nature Strip for me.

BFF Picks: Nature Strip, Brave Smash, Viddora

Race 7 odds at Beteasy

Moonee Valley Race 8
Distance: 1200m
Race Time: 10:15 PM

The final race on the card is the BM90 Godolphin’s ISAURIAN looks like the punters’ friend in this race. has good overall form, though was put to the sword in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes over in Morphettville. This field is not as strong, so should come away with the chocolates. CHOISBORDER from the D Weir stable brings the best form into the race, but it’s not reflected in the early betting. He’s about 5th or 6th, which is very surprising. Is gunning for his fourth straight win. Make of it what you will. The former Queenslander RIGHT OR WRONG brings a last start second into this (Randwick). He’s a 7-year-old now and trained locally in Melbourne, but is still capable of delivering a result in a race such as this.

BFF Picks: Isaurian, Choisborber, Right Or Wrong
