AFL Betting Preview – Round 5

The Crows, Cats and Tigers are all undefeated after four rounds. While, no-one would of expected Sydney and Hawthorn to be sitting at 0-4 after four rounds. Round 5 extends until Tuesday with the Anzac Day clash and a Monday clash between Richmond and Melbourne.

Bet for Free previews the two best games of AFL Round 5, 2017 and we provide our best bets for each game.

St Kilda Saints vs Geelong Cats

Odds: Saints $2.85, Cats $1.43

The Saints are 2-2 after defeating Collingwood and Brisbane in the past two weeks. Goal kicking is now a major issue at the Saints as they’ve kicked 57 behinds in the last three games. They’ll need to kick straight against the Cats.

While, Geelong are sitting on top of the ladder after another win, this time against Hawthorn. The Cats are the second best attacking team in the AFL, having scored 487 points in four games.

James Parsons and Sam Menegola are both out suspended for this match.

Jack Steven is set to return for the Saints in the midfield.

Last 3 meetings:

Round 14, 2016
Etihad Stadium
St Kilda defeats Geelong 93-90

Round 21, 22 Aug 2015
Etihad Stadium
St Kilda drew with Geelong 97-97

Round 13, 15 Jun 2014
Simonds Stadium
Geelong defeats St Kilda 133-37

Margin/Line betting:

The combined margin in the last two meetings has been just 3 points. At +15.5, the Saints should give the Cats a run for their money. The Cats have won by over 40 points twice and have scored over 111 points in all four matches.

To get 30+ disposals:

Patrick Dangerfield is the obvious choice as he averages 31 disposals per game. Seb Ross is the Saints best ball winner as he averages 26 per game and he gained 33 last meeting.

The Saints will take confidence from two previous meetings at Etihad against Geelong, however the Cats overall are playing excellently as a team unit. They’ll win this by a few goals.

Best bet: Over 185.5 points ($1.90)
Value bet: Geelong 1-39 ($2.20)
First goal scorer: D. Menzel ($8.00)

Richmond Tigers vs Melbourne Demons

Odds: Tigers $1.74, Demons $2.10

The Tigers come into this clash at 4-0 for the first time since 1995. They comfortably beat the Lions by 52 points. Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin were both quiet in the win, recording 20 and 16 disposals respectively.

For the Demons, two straight losses as them just inside the top eight by percentage.

The Tigers have little injury concerns and they’re VFL team is on fire.

Melbourne get Jesse Hogan back from suspension. Jordan Lewis is one week away from returning.

Last 3 meetings:

Round 5, 2016
Melbourne defeats Richmond 129-96

Round 4, 2015
Richmond defeated by Melbourne 51-83

Round 9, 2014
Richmond defeated by Melbourne 74-91

Margin/Line betting:

The past five clashes have been decided by under 39 points, so we’ll expect the same result this season. Melbourne have won the past two matches against Richmond by 33 and 32 points.

To get 30+ disposals:

Jack Viney had 37 disposals last year, while Clayton Oliver is averaging 31.2 disposals this season. For Richmond, Martin was quiet last week and should be keen to rebound for a 30+ disposal game.

This should be a close game between two fairly evenly matched sides. The return of Hogan will boost the Demons forward line, however the lose of Gawn hurts as he dominated the Tigers in last year’s clash. We’re going with the Tigers 1-39.

Best bet: Richmond WIN ($1.74)
Value bet: Richmond 1-39 ($2.37)
First goal scorer: D. Martin ($)
