Bet for Free previews the two best games of AFL Round 14, 2017 and we provide our best bets for each game.
Sydney Swans vs Essendon Bombers
Sydney are one of the form sides in the AFL after winning four of their last five matches. They started the season at 0-6 but now sit within 4 points of the top eight.
The Bombers are also in good form at the moment and thrashed the Power before the bye. They have a poor record at the SCG but Essendon would have enjoyed the break and will match the Swans around the ground.
Sydney won’t have Jarrad McVeigh again this week and Lance Franklin was reported on the weekend but should be let off.
For the Bombers, Darcy Parish is expected back after missing a few weeks.
Last 3 meetings:
Round 7, 2016
Sydney defeats Essendon 135-54
Round 1, 2015
Sydney defeats Essendon 72-60
Round 19, 2014
Sydney defeats Essendon 79-57
The Swans are 4-0 against the Bombers since 2010 and the lowest margin is 9 points. Essendon are 4-1 against the line and defeated the Power by 70 points in their last match.
Essendon have scored under 100 points in their last 4 matches at the SCG. They average 95 points per game in 2017. The Swans average 89 points per game and have scored under 100 points in 5 of 6 matches.
This is shaping as one of the matches of the round as both teams fight for a position in the top eight. Sydney will take confidence from last week’s comeback victory and the Bombers might struggle after the bye. We’re backing the Swans by 1-2 goals.
Best bet: Swans -5.5 ($1.91)
Value bet: Swans 1-39 ($2.50)
West Coast Eagles vs Melbourne Demons
West Coast halted a three game losing streak with an impressive win over the Cats last week. They sit seventh on the ladder and can move past the Demons with a win on Saturday night.
Melbourne are flying with four wins in their last 5 matches. The trip to Perth has been unsuccessful in recent years as they’ve lost 17 in a row. But they have the form now to match the Eagles.
Josh Kennedy should return from a calf injury and Sharrod Wellingham is back from injury as well.
Max Gawn is expected back for this match and the Demons will need him.
Last 3 meetings:
Round 18, 2016
West Coast defeats Melbourne 66-60
Round 14, 2015
Melbourne defeated by West Coast 60-114
Round 22, 2014
West Coast defeats Melbourne 119-53
The last meeting was a 6 point margin between these two sides so Melbourne will take confidence. Melbourne are 9-0 against the line this season. West Coast are 0-6 against the line and have lost 3 of their past 4 matches.
The Eagles average 89 points per game and should get a boost with Kennedy back in the forward line. While Melbourne have scored over 100 points in their last 3 matches and average 102 points per game.
Both sides have key players returning for this clash and this should be a close one. If Max Gawn plays, the Demons will have a massive advantage in the ruck and midfield clearances. The Demons haven’t won at Subiaco since the early 2000s and may struggle after a few 6 day breaks. We would back them at the line but the Eagles should win.
Best bet: Demons +15.5 ($1.91)
Value bet: Both teams to score 80 points ($2.40)
