Doomben Cup – 2017

Distance: 2000m
Track: Doomben
Time: 4:01pm, Saturday

Brisbane is expecting rain on the weekend so we’re looking at a heavy track.

It’s Somewhat – $4.20
The favourite for the Doomben Cup. It’s Somewhat has won three races in a row at; Hollindale (Gold Coast), Doncaster (Randwick) and Ajax (Rosehill). He’s 2-0-3 from 7 starts at the distance. He’s won 4 races out of 9 in the last 12 months and has a 1-0-0 record on a heavy track.

Articus – $4.60
Trained by Darren Weir, Articus has an impressive record at the distance (4-1-0). He won his latest race at Flemington. His heavy track is solid as well, with a 1-1-0 record from 3 starts. He has a career win rate of 42%.

Single Gaze – $8.50
Finished a close second to It’s Somewhat in the Hollindale last race. Single Gaze won his last ride at Doomben on a soft track. She has a 1-0-1 record at the distance. Her only ride on a heavy track was a third placing at Rosehill in March this year.

Sense of Occasion – $9.00
Pushed Hartnell for third in the Queen Elizabeth against Winx. He has a poor record at the distance with no victories from 6 starts. The 18 barrier will be a tough start for the gelding. He has a good heavy track record with 1 win from 2 starts.

Star Exhibit – $11.00
Winner of the Perth Cup last year, Star Exhibit steps up into the Group 1 category for the first time at the Doomben Cup. He returned from a spell last start and won the Anniv Vase at Caulfield. At the distance, he’s 1-0-0 and has a 50% career win rate/78% place record.

Amelie’s Star – $11.00
Won the Queen of South at Morphettville last ride as the favourite. This is her first race at the distance. She’s 1-0-0 on a heavy track.

It’s Somewhat is the form runner in the field, while Darren Weir has three challenges in Star Exhibit, Amelie’s Star and Articus. We’re sticking with the favourite in this one.
