It’s an excellent looking field with contenders coming down from Sydney, plus there is a clutch of top-line fillies lining up. There’s not much weight relief between the boys (57kg) and the girls (55kg). The Flemington track should play a lot truer than the debacles that were Caulfield and Moonee Valley, a Good 4 looks like the order of the day. Here’s how they line up:
1 TRAPEZE ARTIST (18), G Ryan, T Angland, 57kg, $8.50
2 KEMENTARI (12), J Cummings, D Lane, 57kg, $12.00

8 MERCHANT NAVY (15), A Purcell, M Zahra, 57kg, $18.00
9 DRACARYS (20), P & P Snowden, R Bayliss, 57kg, $34.00
10 EPTIMUM (4), T Edmonds, R Maloney, 57kg, $9.00

15 HOUTZEN, (5), T Edmonds, J Lloyd, 55kg, $12.00

20 LIMESTONE (19), D Weir, D Yendall, 55kg, $51.00
The form-line for the Coolmore Stud Stakes appears to be the Golden Rose (Randwick) and the Caulfield Guineas, though horses who raced in the latter will be dropping back in distance (1600m to 1200m).
It appears to be an open betting race, which is sure to see runners fluctuate in price on race-day. The best backed runners at this early stage seem to be the fillies Catchy and Invincible Star, the Godolphin runner Viridine and Golden Rose winner Trapeze Artist. The other Godolphin galloper Kementari is another high-class individual, who was pipped at the post by the 100/1 shot Mighty Boss in the Caulfield Guineas. Like many of the runners here, running a straight line from the 1200 mark will be a new experience for some.
The fillies should be right in this, with Formality and Tulip (with Englishman Jamie Spencer onboard) in the mix. Forget Tulip’s run in The Everest, she’s much better than that. Not forgetting the Magic Millions winner Houtzen too.
The Aaron Purcell pairing of Jukebox and Merchant Navy will be better suited to the wide expanses of Flemington. Leading into the Golden Rose a few weeks back, Merchant Navy bought impeccable form into the race but had his colours lowered that day. He’s had a few weeks off to freshen up.
Of the others, quite a few of them are at longer odds, so there will be some rich pickings for punters come race-day.
Catchy, Kementari, Formality
Merchant Navy $18.00
