Women’s AFL 2017 season preview

Women’s AFL 2017 – How it works

The fixture allows for 1 game against each team over 7 rounds. The competition starts on February 3 and runs through the AFL mens preseason. The matches are played at suburban grounds in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. A couple of games will be played at AFL grounds including; Domain Stadium, Manuka Oval and Blacktown Stadium.

After the regular season, the two top sides will play in the Grand Final. The venue and time for the Grand Final is yet to be confirmed.

Adelaide

Odds to win: $7.50
Adelaide start the season with 2 of 3 at home which will give them a great opportunity to start the season on top.

They selected Chelsea Randall, Kellie Gibson as marquee signings and Courtney Cramey, Angela Foley as priority picks.

Brisbane Lions

Odds to win: $9.00
The Lions kickoff the season against the Demons and they have recruited a host of local footballers in their squad, headlined by Tayla Harris.

Tayla Harris was a marquee signing for the Brisbane Lions as she played local football in Brisbane as a junior. She is arguably one of the best forwards in the competition.

Emma Zielke is also a talented local footballer for the Lions. She played in Coorparoo’s Grand Final win in the 2014 QWAFA competition. She also won the league medal in 2014 and 2015 (tied).

Carlton

Odds to win: $7.50

The Blues are led by Darcy Vescio as their captain for the first season of AFL Women’s. Vescio has won 4 VWFL premierships in her career and was named best on ground in two of the wins (2015,2016). She’ll be the heart and soul of the team and other teams will look to quell her influence.

Collingwood

Odds to win: $6.00

Moana Hope is the captain for Collingwood and is a prolific goal kicker. In 2016 alone, she kicked over 100 goals in a season and was the first ever female player in the VWFL to do so.

The Magpies kick off the season against arch-rival Carlton on Friday, February 3.

Fremantle

Odds to win: $4.50

Fremantle are one of the early favourites to win the Women’s AFL league in 2017. They’ll be captained by Kara Donnellan. Donnellan is an attacking midfielder and loves contested football.

Greater Western Sydney

Odds to win: $9.00

The Giants are the outsiders with Luxbet mainly due to an injury to their first pick, Renee Forth. Forth injured her ACL playing in a WAWFL match and will miss the season. The Giants selected Emma Swanson from Western Australia as their second marquee signing. She was named captain of the WA Youth Girls side and is known for her accurate kicking ability.

With the injury to Forth and two straight away matches to start the season, it’ll be a tough season for the Giants.

Melbourne

Odds to win: $4.50

Melbourne picked the best midfielder in the competition with Daisy Pearce as their top marquee pick. She played in 6 premiership victories with the Darebin Falcons and captained Victoria in 2013.

The Demons have three tough encounters to start the season as they play; Brisbane (home), Collingwood (away) and the Bulldogs (away). If they can win 2 of 3 or more, they’ll easily make the Grand final.

Western Bulldogs

Odds to win: $4.50

Katie Brennan was the Bulldogs first marquee pick and she is a dominant goal-kicking forward. In the last three seasons of the VWAFL, Brennan has kicked over 150 goals. She also played with Pearce at the Darebin Falcons. Ellie Blackburn will team up with Brennan for an attacking forward/midfield gameplan. Blackburn was picked for All-Australian three times in her career.

The Dogs have the best start of the season with 4 straight games at Whitten Oval.

Predictions

As this is the first year of the league, it’s hard to gauge how teams will perform. The Demons and Bulldogs have played each other multiple times before the league started but both teams have very different squads now. Collingwood recruited the best goal kicker in the league and Brisbane are a smokey with the talented Tayla Harris. The Bulldogs play 4 matches in a row at home which is a huge advantage.

We’re going with the Demons purely because Daisy Pearce has the most experience in winning Grand finals during her career.
