Makybe Diva Stakes Day Preview and Tips
We are blessed with near-perfect racing conditions this Saturday as we head to Flemington for the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes and other features on the card. A brilliant racing card and hopefully we can find the feature winners for you. A fine but cloudy 21 degrees is expected and the track will be a Good 3 – 4 by the time racing commences. The rail is true and the long Flemington straight gives backmarkers their chance to run on.
Group 2 Danehill Stakes 1200m
Group racing kicks off with the G2 Danehill Stakes for 3-year-olds over the 1200m straight. Regular readers of these previews will know I really dislike straight races as a betting prospect as they become less tactical affairs. Ready For Victory was huge in the Mcneil Stakes a fortnight ago when only just going down to Gold Symphony after being blocked for half the straight. Headwater didn’t show much when resuming in the San Domenico Stakes but had to work hard for the lead. He has proven ability and will improve on his first up performance. Black Vanquish resumes and going for his third win on the trot. This is his hardest task yet but this certainly isn’t a strong G2 event. Finally, I have Boston Light rounding out my top four after he had no run until late at his debut run at Moonee Valley. We really didn’t get to see what he had to offer and he could be a spec bet.
Ready For Victory
Black Vanquish is the early market mover being backed into $5.50 from his $7 opening quote. Ready For Victory and Headwater have both eased slightly. Happy to back Ready For Victory at anything above $3 as he has clearly come back in great order.
Group 2 Bobby Lewis Qlty 1200m
Another straight race. Excellent. Lucky Hussler was huge first-up earlier this year when winning the G1 William Reid at Moonee Valley. He carries the top weight but looks to be a class above most of these. Rich Enuff went down as favourite when resuming at Caulfield last time out and I’m tipping the same to happen again. He is certainly a winning chance but Lucky Hussler looks a better prospect. Kaepernick put in a massive run at his last run at Doomben and can go close off the 53kg if he handles the Flemington straight. This is a big step up but he was arguably unlucky not to win. Look for him late. Churchill Dancer makes the step up to Group company after his recent 5L win at Moonee Valley. He has won down the straight before and is another good chance.
The biggest move since markets opened have been for Setinum now into $12 from $20 yesterday. Lucky Hussler has been firm at $6.50 and a good each-way bet.
Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes 1600m
The race of the day and we have Boban once again as favourite off his Memsie Stakes win. He was incredibly lucky to win that after being ridden for luck up the inside and just getting the head down at the right time. He has drawn barrier 4 again and will settle in a similar position midfield. Hi World and Entirely Platinum will have to work to the lead from their wide draws and will ensure some early pace injected into the race. Rising Romance was unlucky in the Memsie after being held up for a portion of the straight and getting home very well once clear. From barrier 1 I expect her to sit in the perfect position just off the pace and should be right in the finish with even luck. Easily the best run of the Memsie came from Weary who covered a stack of extra ground rounding the bend and still managed fourth. Unfortunately for this Chris Waller trained gelding he has drawn poorly in 13 and is going to have to settle in the second half of the field. If he is close enough at the top of the straight he will be a serious winning chance. Alpine Eagle has his first taste of open-class Group racing and should be coming home down the centre of the track with the right run. He narrowly went down in the G1 Australian Guineas in March and should be able to perform with the big guns. Happy Trails is also worth mentioning as a winning chance now he’s back to a dry track. I liked his run in the Memsie and from barrier 3 will have a nice run in transit.
Early punters have deemed the market as fairly spot-on with no major market moves to speak of. Boban is $4.40 favourite to win his sixth Group 1. Rising Romance is $11 currently and we might see better on the day. Whilst I’m tipping Boban to win my money will be going in Rising Romance’s direction. A tough race and I could justify backing any of the aforementioned runners.
Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes 1400m
We should see fast beginner Vezalay fly out of the gates here from barrier 4 which will force Tawteen and Maastricht to work hard to be able to cross and lead. Backmarkers will get their chance. Noble Protector starts her spring campaign as favourite in this event for the mares and rightly so. She begun her Autumn campaign with a huge win at Flemington and will extremely hard to beat from barrier 1. May’s Dream put in a huge run from the back first-up at Caulfield in a race that didn’t really suit backmarkers. This race should be run to suit her run-on style and the progression up to 1400m will only be beneficial. Madam Gangster was a strong winner in the same race and should be in the finish. Platinum Rocker is a consistent mare and was unlucky in the G3 Bletchingly in July. She will also be running on.
Early money has been for Platinum Rocker now into $12 after being $17 when markets opened. Noble Protector has eased slightly to $3.60. May’s Dream steady at $11 and she is a brilliant each-way bet.
