Spring Championship Stakes, Royal Randwick Tips 2000m

The three-year-olds are lining up in the third Group 1 feature in Sydney. Already we’ve had the Golden Rose and the Flight Stakes. Now the nine colts and sole filly stretch out over 2000 metres in the Spring Championship Stakes. We’ll preview the main contenders below.

Unlike the Turnbull Stakes raced down at Flemington on the same day, at least the ten starters assembled here give punters multiple options, as the odds are spread quite tightly among them. Let’s see how the final field lines up:

1 ACE HIGH, D Payne, T Angland, 4, 56.5kg, $3.40
2 ASTORIA, J Cummings, G Schofield, 8, 56.5kg, $8.00
3 TANGLED, C Waller, B Shinn, 2, 56.5kg, $5.50
4 SANCTIONED, J Cummings, K McEvoy, 10, 56.5kg, $4.50
5 COLESBERG, D Payne, J Collett, 3, 56.5kg, $51.00
6 DISSOLUTION, Team Hawkes, S Clipperton, 1, 56.5kg, $9.50
7 SULLY, T Busuttin & N Young, B Avdulla, 9, 56.5kg, $8.50
8 LANGLEY, J O’Shea, C Reith, 7, 56.5kg, $13.00
9 SURPRISE BULLET, B Lockwood, L Cassidy, 5, 56.5kg, $26.00
10 CORAL COAST, S Webb, T Clark, 6, 54.5kg, $18.00

Sure to be at the forefront of punters anchor bets is the David Payne trained colt Ace High. No doubt his form line at winning the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes last start two weeks ago has put his SP at the top of the pack. Prior to that, his form was a mixed bag, and he only broke maiden ranks two months ago. Bred to run over ground, and should be within shouting distance if that Gloaming run was anything to go by. $3.40

The Godolphin stable line up Astoria, and comes in at fourth favourite on starting price odds. Has only moderate form, and struggled to the line in the 1800 metre Gloaming Stakes, placing sixth. A few of his rivals that day are also lined up here. Not quite sure whether he’s top-notch just yet. Getting to 2000 metres might be a tough ask at this stage of his preparation. $8.00

Chris Waller’s team has just the one runner in the race: Tangled. While all eyes will be on Winx down at Flemington, there is every chance Waller could pick up the two Group 1 prizes on offer this Saturday. Tangled may only have two wins from eight, but one of them was a Group 2 feature up at Doomben during the Queensland Winter Carnival. Sure to be in the crosshairs of punters multiple betting options this Saturday. My pick for the race. $5.50

The second Godolphin runner is Sanctioned, and he could be another to feature prominently in the Spring Championship Stakes. His form reads one win and four placings from five starts. Notably, he’s finished ahead of some his rivals in prior races and comes into calculations after a strong second to Ace High in the Gloaming. This bloke will make up part of my trifecta. $4.50

The Victorian visitor Sully is one of a promising parade of young horses being trained by former Kiwis Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young down at Cranbourne. It looks like Sully, and his stablemates Main Stage and Johnny Vinko make up a solid backline of contenders nominated for the VRC Derby. Sully’s form line reads great, and his run for fourth in the Gloaming was respectable. Could turn into a half-decent stayer, so will be much better suited to 2000 metres and beyond. Could run a place, so not completely without a chance. $8.50

The Hawkes team from Rosehill saddle up Dissolution. This colt has yet to win a race, though finished closely behind Ataraxia in last week’s Dulcify Quality. I’d be hesitant putting him in the frame when other better-credentialled runners are ahead of him. Take on faith. $9.50

Tangled $5.50

Best Roughie:
