5. Vega Magic (3)
T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: Craig Williams (59kg)
Vega Magic starts as the favourite for the Memsie Stakes and he boasts a great second up record. After winning the Regal Roller on the 19th August after a spell, he has a 3-0-1 record in 4 second up starts. He also won three straight starts, dating back to December 2016 at Ascot. In May, Vega Magic won The Goodwood as a $4.80 favourite. He’ll be tough to beat in this race.
2. Le Romain (6)
T: K A Lees J: B Melham (59kg)
Le Romain is also second up from a spell and he finished second at Randwick last start. He has a 2-2-0 second up record from 4 career starts. He has finished second in all four career races at this distance, so he’ll be looking to break through in the Memsie Stakes.
1. Black Heart Bart (5)
T: D K Weir J: B Rawiller (59kg)
Black Heart Bart is the third in the betting but he’s a quality horse. His second up record is very impressive at 3-3-0 from 8 starts. He also boasts a great track/distance record. At the distance, he has won 8 of 14 races and has only failed to place in 1 of 14 races. At the track/distance, he’s won 4 of 5 races with a third as well. He’s coming off a third place at Caulfield last start against Hartnell. But he’s a serious value bet based on his record.
8. Hey Doc (1)
T: Tony Mcevoy J: L Currie (58.5kg)
Hey Doc was spelled after a sixth finish in The Goodwood. He came out and won at Flemington last start and this will be his second up start. He’s won 2 of 3 second up starts with a second as well. He’s also finished third in two straight races at Caulfield so he’ll be in our trifecta this Saturday.
12. Yankee Rose (8)
T: David Vandyke J: D Yendall (56.5kg)
Yankee Rose is first up from a spell and she’s 1-1-0 in 3 first up career starts. She finished 14th of 15 in the Crown Oaks last year, which was her last start. She didn’t have a great 12 months so we’ll probably leave her out of this one.
3. Tosen Stardom (4)
T: D K Weir J: B Shinn (59kg)
Tosen Stardom is an interesting choice. He finished just 0.10 lengths behind Black Heart Bart at Caulfield in late February. But he finished 5th at the Lawrence Stakes a few weeks ago against Hartnell and Black Heart Bart. He has a good second up record with 2 wins from 6 starts, so he’s one to watch.
11. I Am A Star (7)
T: S P Nichols J: L Nolen (56.5kg)
Won his last race at this distance but hasn’t finished in the top two in her last three races.
4. Humidor (11)
T: D K Weir J: M Zahra (59kg)
Has a respectable second up record (2-1-0 from 3) but finished 6th in his last race at the track/distance. Could finish third/fourth if he starts well.
6. Charmed Harmony (2)
T: J D Sadler J: Katelyn Mallyon (59kg)
Moves up in class but finished second against Hartnell and beat Black Heart Bart in last start, one to watch.
7. Jon Snow (10)
T: M Baker & A Forsman J: S Baster (58.5kg)
Career Win Percentage: 25%
Career Place Percentage: 67%
9. Seaburge (12)
T: D & B Hayes & T Dabernig J: Regan Bayliss (58.5kg)
Career Win Percentage: 15%
Career Place Percentage: 38%
10. Single Gaze (9)
T: N J Olive J: Ms K O’hara (57kg)
Career Win Percentage: 23%
Career Place Percentage: 59%
This is tough pick between Vega Magic and Black Heart Bart. But Black Heart Bart is paying $6 for a win and we think that’s value due to his track/distance record. Vega Magic won’t be far behind him though.
