The A.J Moir Stakes, Moonee Valley Tips 1200m

The A.J Moir Stakes brings together some of the best sprinters in the land. It is the feature event at Moonee Valley this Friday night, on what is a busy weekend of racing. We’ll preview some of the main contenders below.

We recommend betting with William Hill on Horse Racing this Saturday. If you’re looking for a new bookmaker, Bet for Free has a special offer for you when you join and deposit over $50.

Every year, this race seems to attract a top class field. It is a Group 1 sprint, and is the first of six feature Group races being conducted this weekend, between Moonee Valley (Friday), Royal Randwick (Saturday) and Caulfield (Sunday, due to it being AFL Grand Final day on the Saturday).

Here is how they will line up this Friday Night:

1 TERRAVISTA, Joe Pride, Corey Brown, 7, 58.5kg, $13.00
2 MALAGUERRA, Peter Gelagotis, Ben Melham, 16, 58.5kg, $10.00
3 VOODOO LAD, Darren Weir, Blake Shinn, 15, 58.5kg, $12.00
4 ROCK MAGIC, Chris Gangemi, Jarrad Noske, 8, 58.5kg, $19.00
5 RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, Peter and Paul Snowden, Hugh Bowman, 14, 58.5kg, $2.90
6 DERRYN, David and B Hayes and T Dabernig, Mark Zahra, 3, 58.5kg, $23.00
7 JUNGLE EDGE, Mick Bell, Kevin Forrester, 12, 58.5kg, $61.00
8 FAATINAH, David and B Hayes and T Dabernig, Regan Bayliss, 1, 58.5kg, $31.00
9 SHEIDEL, David and B Hayes and T Dabernig, Joao Moreira, 6, 56.5kg, $7.50
10 VIDDORA, Lloyd Kennewell, Joe Bowditch, 10, 56.5kg, $23.00
11 HEATHERLY, Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Damian Lane, 13, 56.5kg, $12.00
12 SWEET SHERRY, Brent Stanley, Luke Currie, 5, 56.5kg, $34.00
13 SHE WILL REIGN, Gary Portelli, Kerrin McEvoy, 11, 50kg, $4.00
14e HELLBENT, Darren Weir, Brad Rawiller, 17, 58.5kg, $19.00
15e SUPIDO, Michael Kent, Rider TBA, 9, 58.5kg, $23.00
16e SUPER CASH, Andrew Noblet, Katelyn Mallyon, 2, 56.5kg, $19.00
17e ABILITY, Robert Smerdon, Dwayne Dunn, 4, 58.5kg, $18.00

The only Snowden runner in the race, Russian Revolution will probably vie for favouritism with Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign. Won at the Valley on the 9th Sept (G2 McEwen Stakes) defeating a small field with Heatherly running second. With Hugh Bowman aboard, this horse is primed and ready. Expect another bold showing. $2.90

Opening up as the second favourite is the aforementioned Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign. This will be her sixth start and her first in this new campaign. She’s had two recent barrier trials and should go well. Though initially drawn 11, she’ll come into barrier 8 with the three emergencies drawn insider her unlikely to start. If she can stay on the pace, she’ll be there when the whips are cracking.$4.00

Terravista is the big chestnut who is proven on the big stage. Trainer Joe Pride said this week that Terravista will be ready to pounce when the heat goes on. Has a big finish on him, and can come from the clouds in the blink of an eye. Make sure to have him in your selections – regardless! $13.00

The ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira is reunited with his sprinting damsel Sheidel, after the duo collected the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate in the Autumn. The 6yo mare is still tough as old boots and may look to lead if the opportunity presents itself. Never bet against a horse when Moreira is aboard. Her odds will likely wobble around closer to race time. One to watch. $7.50

The former Lee and Anthony Freedman runner Malaguerra will be lining up for his first run back in this new season. The dual Group 1 winner has often been a case of bouquets and brickbats in some of his runs, and for him to do well here, he’ll need to bring his game-face as he’s up against some high-class sprinters. Coming from a wide draw doesn’t help if the speed is on. $10.00

Heatherly is a proven Victorian sprinter, with 14 wins and placings from 17 starts. She ran second in this race last year, denied by the fast-finishing Extreme Choice. On that form line alone, could it be a case of history repeats? She could very well figure in the money. Damian Lane to ride. $12.00

The Western Australian visitor Rock Magic makes another interstate raid. His form back in Perth is second to none. He’s had four Group 1 starts, for a third (Winterbottom Stakes), fourth (William Reid Stakes) and two unplaced runs, including the T.J Smith Stakes on a heavy track up in Sydney during the Autumn. His last two runs were wins in Group 3 races during the W.A winter. Trainer Chris Gangemi knows enough about the horse by bringing him over for the Moir Stakes, to suggest he’s in with a chance. $19.00

Winner:
Russian Revolution $2.90

Trifecta:
Russian Revolution, Terravista, Sheidel

Best Roughie:
Sweet Sherry $34.00
