Queensland Derby 2200m – Race 7
10th June, 3:00pm
6. Shocking Luck (1)
T: S Autridge & J Richards J: O P Bosson (57kg)
Finished 6th in the Grand Prix last start at Eagle Farm, which was the same distance as this race. Last ride at Doomben, won the Rough Habit at 2000m.
2. Ruthven (9)
T: C Maher J: J Bowman (57kg)
Ruthven has finished in second place in 4 of his last 5 starts and he’s been unlucky in a few of those races. He’s coming off a month spell and has ridden well after a break. He would be our best value bet in this race.
1. Volatile Mix (20)
T: D K Weir J: John Allen (57kg)
In great form with a second placing in the Grand Prix and he won the South Australian Derby. Gets a tough barrier draw at number 20. Trained by Darren Weir so he should be thereabouts in this one.
16. Ana Royale (3)
T: S J Webb J: M Zahra (55kg)
Finished 8th in the Queensland Oaks last race and looks for a better showing in the Derby.
3. Black On Gold (14)
T: C J Waller J: Tommy Berry (57kg)
Looking for an improved run after finished 12th of 14 in the Grand Prix. He’s yet to finish in the placings on a heavy track in 4 career starts. The distance is the concern for Black On Gold.
Ruthven has raced well without a win and is coming off a longer break compared to the field. We’re tipping he’ll get the victory in the Derby.
Stradbroke Handicap 1350m – Race 8
10th June, 3:40pm
1. Clearly Innocent (20)
T: K A Lees J: J Bowman (57kg)
Has won his last two races, including the Kingsford Smith Cup at Eagle Farm on a heavy track. Absolutely loves the distance with 5 wins from 6 career starts. He has a 60% winning career record and deserves favouritism. Only knock is the 20 barrier start.
4. Counterattack (2)
T: C J Waller J: O P Bosson (54.5kg)
Counterattack has finished in the top three without a win in his last three races. Came within half a length of Redzel in the Doomben 10,000. Also came third against Clearly Innocent and Jungle Edge in the Kingsford Smith.
8. Mackintosh (1)
T: C J Waller J: K Mc Evoy (53.5kg)
Coming off a long spell and has won his two career races in 1st ups. He’s 2-0 at the track and has a 2-0-0 distance record from 3 starts.
2. Jungle Edge (7)
T: M A Bell J: K Forrester (55.5kg)
Stormed home for a second finish in the Kingsford Smith. He loves a heavy track with 5 wins from 11 starts and he’s raced on 7 consecutive heavy tracks. His distance record is solid as well with a 2-1-3 record from 9 starts.
10. Ulmann (8)
T: D K Weir J: L Nolen (53.5kg)
Ulmann is experienced at the distance with 16 career starts for a 4-3-2 record. He finished third in the BRC Sprint against Jungle Edge last month.
If it’s a heavy track, Jungle Edge is the best bet. Mackintosh will finish strong after a long spell. Clearly Innocent has superb form.
Brisbane Cup 2200m – Race 9
10 June, 4:20pm
1. Single Gaze (14)
T: N J Olive J: Ms K O’hara (59kg)
Won the P.J. O’Shea Stakes last race against Rudy after a 6th finish in the Doomben Cup. She’s won 2 of 5 career starts at Doomben.
5. Neverland (8)
T: D K Weir J: D Yendall (53kg)
Not in the greatest form with a couple of finishes outside the top three lately. Hasn’t won at the distance in three starts but has finished second and third once each.
4. Top Of My List (9)
T: A & E Cummings J: Tommy Berry (57kg)
She was freshened after winning two straight races at Rosehill and Randwick. She’s attempting the distance for the first time. Loves a heavy track with a 50% career winning record.
11. Zambezi Warrior (3)
T: S Autridge & J Richards J: J Lloyd (53kg)
Finished second the Eagle Farm Premier’s Cup. Hasn’t won in the last 7 races but is a solid pick for the trifecta.
2. Rudy (12)
T: Ms H Page J: J Bowman (58.5kg)
Rudy has an impressive record at Doomben with a 5 wins from 16 starts and has only finished outside top three in 4 of 16. He’s yet to win at the distance in 3 career starts and finished 1.30 lengths behind Single Gaze last race.
3. Benzini (4)
T: A & H Bull J: K A Mc Culloch (58kg)
Won the last Brisbane Cup last year and is back to defend the title. Finished 4th in the Premier’s Cup and has a 1-0-2 record at the distance from 5 starts.
We think Single Gaze will take out the Brisbane Cup and Benzini is the value bet of the race as the winner of the Brisbane Cup last year.
