Turnbull Stakes, Flemington Tips 2000m
Can any horse beat the wonder mare Winx in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes? The situation isn’t helped by having a seven-horse field, no renowned pacemaker, and a situation similar to last year’s Caulfield Stakes debacle with only three horses in it. Are local trainers running for the hills? Certainly looks like it.

The small seven-horse field for the Turnbull Stakes will line-up this Saturday as follows:
1 HUMIDOR, D Weir, D Lane, 4, 59kg, $4.50
2 WINX, C Waller, H Bowman, 2, 57kg, $1.16
3 VENTURA STORM, D & B Hayes, T Dabernig, R Bayliss, 5, 56.5kg, $26.00
4 ASSIGN, R Hickmott, K Mallyon, 6, 56.5kg, $91.00
5 MAGICOOL, T Romeo, C Brown, 1, 54.5kg, $301.00
6 SIR ISAAC NEWTON, R Hickmott, D Oliver, 7, 54.5kg, $51.00
7 SKYFIRE, A Johnston, D Dunn, 3, 54.5kg, $301.00
The race is looking fairly lopsided, with a small field and the world’s best racehorse on turf lining up. Suffice to say, this is looking like a one-horse race with Winx making her debut appearance at Flemington for the Turnbull. It’s difficult seeing any of her rivals putting a stop to her juggernaut record of successive wins. Only the bravest punter will be game enough to bet against her. $1.16
The Australian Cup winner Humidor looms as the only other serious contender in the race. He has won on the track and over the distance but that counts for nothing when a horse like Winx is in the field. Darren Weir will be hoping for a decent hit-out before the Caulfield Cup in two weeks time. $4.50
Of the others, there’s not much to say really, because this is a seven-horse field only the first two horses will be paying a dividend. Other than Ventura Storm who is a paying a starting price of $26, the others are at extremely long odds.
It is disappointing to see a race like the Turnbull being reduced to nothing more than an exhibition for one horse. I am certain that if Winx wasn’t starting, we’d have more runners (as trainers feel they have a fair chance of competing) with better odds being shared around more horses. The industry should be very concerned by this.
