Caulfield: Caulfield Guineas Day, 13 Oct 2018

This Saturday is one of the milestone dates on the Australian racing calendar. It’s Caulfield Guineas Day, with four Group 1’s, plus the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes plus a couple of supporting Group 3 races. With the weather expected to be fine, it should be another bumper days racing. Can’t wait!

It’s a full race day, featuring ten races, the $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas being the main event. Here’s how our picks line up.

Caulfield Race 1
Inglis Debutant Stakes
Distance: 1000m
Race Time: 12:10 PM

First race on the card is for maidens and mostly first-time entrants. As such it’s a lottery. The four main contenders appear to be trial winners including: UTZON, MOCKERY, RUSKI and CHAMPAGNE BOOM. Mockery was lined up to start at Flemington last week but was scratched. Many of the others haven’t even had a trial so it’s hard to pick the form when there is none.

BFF Picks: Utzon, Champagne Boom, Mockery
Value Price: Mockery $10.00
Roughie: Ruski $18.00

Caulfield Race 2
Big Screen Co Weekend Hussler
Distance: 1400m
Race Time: 12:45 PM

A competitive field of ten line up in this. Short money is being offered for four horses: SIRCCONI with Linda Meech aboard, Darren Weir’s ICONOCLASM plus Sydney visitor FIERCE IMPACT. The fourth contender is the most interesting. He’s the Charlie Appleby trained galloper COMICAS from England, a stablemate of star Jungle Cat. Comicas will be carrying topweight of 60kgs, and has a second placing in a Group 1 (2017 Meydan/UAE), which is more than his rivals presenting in this race have. He goes well fresh and should be too good for this lot.

BFF Picks: Comicas, Sircconi, Fierce Impact
Value Price: Fierce Impact $6.50
Roughie: Ozi Choice $12.00

Caulfield Race 3
Thoroughbred Club Stakes
Distance: 1200m
Race Time: 1:20 PM

This is the three-year-old fillies race over 1200m, and the standout chance is the well-performed SUNLIGHT. She’ll start as a short-priced favourite based on her deeds in her two-year-old season. The two main challengers include last start winner at Moonee Valley in MERYL and Mornington local HUMMA HUMMA who like Sunlight, has never been out of the money. Other than GOLDEN HALO and BLEU ROCHE, I’m not convinced about the others.

BFF Picks: Sunlight, Meryl, Humma Humma
Value Price: Humma Humma $6.00
Roughie: Golden Halo $11.00

Caulfield Race 4
Cape Grim Beef Stakes
Distance: 1200m
Race Time: 1:55 PM

This is the mares race over 1200m, and where the all-important barrier draw comes into play. Gold Coast mare WINTER BRIDE has all the kudos in this one, gunning for four in a row and from a good barrier (8). Stats over 1200m is impeccable (4,3 and 1 from 8 starts). She will anchor the betting for sure, currently at $4.00 sure to dip below that. I do have a lot of time for BOOKER and COOL PASSION having invested a bit of cash on them previously. Both are second up here, and will be improved by their first-up runs. LEATHER N LACE and FRAGONARD should race close to the lead, but will they be there when the whips are cracking? A couple of others are MOONLOVER and DAWN DAWN, but both are drawn extremely wide. Not sure about their chances.

BFF Picks: Winter Bride, Cool Passion, Booker
Value Price: Booker $11.00
Roughie: Moonlover $20.00

Caulfield Race 5
Keno Schillaci Stakes
Distance: 1100m
Race Time: 2:30 PM

It looks like a two horse war, but it’ll probably be anything but. VOODOO LAD holds all the aces in this one, his likely price expected to get down as low as $3.00. SNITTY KITTY is second up, after an eye-catching fourth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes two weekends back (Viddora). Is expected to be very competitive. BALL OF MUSCLE also lined up in that race, but was never comfortable on the Moonee Valley circuit. Expect a better showing here. SAVANNAH AMOUR would have appreciated her first-up prep run in the Moir, and will be better off lining up here. Sure to go well. Of the others, old-timer FLAMBERGE always does well at Caulfield, while Lindsay Park’s FATINAAH and Irish raider SPIRIT OF VALOR (one of three lining up here, including INTELLIGENCE CROSS and FLEET REVIEW from the Aidan O’Brien stable) might surprise.

BFF Picks: Voodoo Lad, Snitty Kitty, Savannah Amour
Value Price: Savannah Amour $10.00
Roughie: Flamberge $21.00

Caulfield Race 6
Schweppes Thousand Guineas (3yo fillies)
Distance: 1600m
Race Time: 3:10 PM

It seems like a one-horse race on paper, but I think you’ll find this to be one of the toughest races on the card. SMART MELODY will command all the attention. Unbeaten so far but this is her toughest test. Last start win in the Thousand Guineas Prelude saw her running out of puff toward the end, but she did enough. Her stablemate EL DORADO DREAMING is a Group 1 winner and presents as a definite threat. Sydney filly FIESTA has been knocking on the door while another Group 1 filly, the locally trained SEABROOK has the class but not the form. THRILLSTER is one to watch for. Super run behind Smart Melody last start and runs well at Caulfield too. The Darren Weir pairing of KRONE and AMPHITRITE both raced in last weekend’s Edward Manifold Stakes, but both are drawn out in the car park, and it would be hard to recommend them in a classier field and on a tighter track.

BFF Picks: El Dorado Dreaming, Smart Melody, Fiesta
Value Price: Fiesta $9.00
Roughie: Seabrook $26.00

Caulfield Race 7
Aquis Toorak Handicap
Distance: 1600m
Race Time: 3:45 PM

The Toorak presents a nice lineup headed up by international superstar JUNGLE CAT, Australian iron-horse HARTNELL and fast improving Chris Waller mare SHILLELAGH. Others no doubt might have a say in this, including the on-speed trio of I AM A STAR, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR and Tasmanian HELLOVA STREET. All have drawn wide however, so it could be all on up front in the early stages. I’ll go with the impressive Charlie Appleby horse.

BFF Picks: Jungle Cat, Hartnell, I Am A Star
Value Price: Noire $10.00
Roughie: Dollar For Dollar $18.00

Caulfield Race 8
Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes
Distance: 2000m
Race Time: 4:35 PM

Another excellent field assembled for a time-honoured race. Great that we have a full field, rather than the three-horse debacle we had back in 2016. There’s no Winx in this one, however, the Europeans BENBATL, BLAIR HOUSE, CLIFFS OF MOHER plus former Brits HOMESMAN and HARLEM are in a very competitive line-up. Darren Weir has two runners: HUMIDOR and TOSEN BASIL; Chris Waller has his two excellent charges in D’ARGENTO and UNFORGOTTEN. In this race, I think class rises to the top, that and the left-handed way of going will have some bearing.

BFF Picks: Benbatl, Blair House, Homesman
Value Price: Blair House $11.00
Roughie: Tosen Basil $12.00

Caulfield Race 9
Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas
Distance: 1600m
Race Time: 5:15 PM

This race looks like a four-horse affair with THE AUTUMN SUN, NATIVE SOLDIER. LEONARDO DA HINCHI and filly OOHOOD being the standout chances. On this course, I think I fancy the Victorian trained colts more so than the Sydney colt The Autumn Sun. I was very impressed with Native Soldier’s win in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude two weeks back, and his ability to run on the speed will hold him in good stead. The Weir colt Leonardo Da Hinchi was also impressive on Moir Stakes night, getting out with acceleration. Oohood, of course, flew home late to grab her first Group 1 in the Flight Stakes. Can she repeat it against the boys? Possibly.

BFF Picks: Native Soldier, Oohood, Leonardo Da Hinchi
Value Price: Oohood $9.50
Roughie: Tavisan $15.00

Caulfield Race 10
Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes
Distance: 2400m
Race Time: 6:10 PM

An excellent lineup, with a handful of recently arrived European stayers looking for race fitness ahead of future assignments. BRIMHAM ROCKS shapes as a likely threat, given his Metropolitan second, and good form prior. RISING RED is on the improve and was only pipped at his last start on the track. Definite prospect. Also striking form at the right time are the OTI Racing pair of LORD FANDANGO and GALLIC CHIEFTAIN. These two can stay all day. The former won this race last year. Look for an improved showing from Cups contender BIG DUKE, while the best of the Europeans could be YUCATAN with James McDonald aboard and the Newmarket Godolphin galloper PRIZE MONEY.

BFF Picks: Brimham Rocks, Rising Red, Lord Fandango
Value Price: Yucatan $10.00
Roughie: Sin To Win $34.00
