AFL Betting Preview – Round 21

Only three rounds remain before the finals and the top eight is yet to be decided. Round 21 starts with the Bulldogs and Giants rivalry at Etihad. On Saturday, the afternoon kicks off with an interesting clash between the Cats and Tigers. The Bombers face the in-form Crows in Melbourne and we’re expecting a high scoring match. On Sunday, the Demons and Saints aim for a top eight finish at the MCG.

Bet for Free previews the two best games of AFL Round 21, 2017 and we provide our best bets for each game.

Western Bulldogs vs GWS Giants

Odds: Bulldogs $2.10, Giants $1.72

Form:

The Bulldogs are on a four match winning streak and they’ve moved into 7th position on the ladder. In Round 20, they defeated the Lions in Brisbane.

The Giants are back on a winning streak after two solid performances in a row. They beat the Bulldogs on Friday night earlier in the season and they’re starting to clear the injury list.

Injuries/Suspensions:

Jason Johannesion missed last week with a back injury and will be in doubt on a short turnaround. Robert Murphy replaced him and should lineup against the Giants. Easton Wood injured his hammy last week and will miss the next few matches.

Shane Mumford is out with suspension. Cameron and Patton were missing last week and they’ll need to prove their fitness for this clash.

Last 3 meetings:

Round 6, 2017
Manuka Oval
GWS defeats Western Bulldogs 75-73

Preliminary Final, 2016
Spotless Stadium
GWS defeated by Western Bulldogs 83-89

Round 9, 2016
Spotless Stadium
GWS defeats Western Bulldogs 98-73

Margin/Line betting:

The last two meetings have been decided by a goal so we’re expecting another tight contest on Friday. The Bulldogs are 7-2 at Etihad this season and four of those matches have fallen under the 10 point margin. The Giants haven’t won at the venue this year and lost to the Blues by a point in the last match at Etihad.

Total points:

The Bulldogs have found their mojo in-front of goal lately as they’ve kicked 100+ points in their last three wins. They also kicked 127 points against the Bombers in their last match at Etihad. While the Giants have Brett Deledio back, they could be missing their two star forwards for this match. The midfield will be the key and Josh Kelly kicked 3 goals last week.

Prediction:

This should be another cracking Friday night encounter and the Giants are the current favourites. However, the Bulldogs are playing for a finals spot and they have a better record at Etihad. The Bulldogs are our tip for this match.
Best bet: Bulldogs WIN ($2.10)
Value bet: Bulldogs 1-39 ($2.45)

Melbourne Demons vs St Kilda Saints

Odds: Demons $1.63, Saints $2.25

Form:

Melbourne have lost two on the trot and they’ve fallen to 10th spot on the ladder. They did beat the Saints in Round 1 this year, but overall they have a poor record against them.

On the other hand, the Saints are playing well at the moment and they secured 4 points against the Eagles last round. They sit 11th on the ladder and they’ll need to win this for any chance of finals.

Injuries/Suspensions:

Christian Salem could be in doubt after a leg injury last week.

The Saints have a few injury concerns. Jack Steven has a sore hip but played out the game. While Nick Riewoldt suffered a concussion. With only a few matches left in his career, he’ll hopefully be okay for this crucial match.

Last 3 meetings:

Round 1, 2017
Etihad Stadium
St Kilda defeated by Melbourne 90-120

Round 17, 2016
Etihad Stadium
St Kilda defeats Melbourne 110-74

Round 6, 2016
Etihad Stadium
Melbourne defeated by St Kilda 96-135

Margin/Line betting:

In the last four meetings, the closest margin is 30 points which came in Round 1 this season. The Saints haven’t lost at the MCG against the Demons since 2006. But the Saints haven’t played at the venue this season. The Demons are 4-5 at the MCG this season.

Total points:

The Demons have failed to kick over 100 points in their last 7 matches and they’re missing key forward Jesse Hogan. The Saints have kicked 100+ points in two of three matches at the MCG last season. They’re also coming off 103 points against the Eagles.

Prediction:

The Saints are the underdogs but after last week, they’re in much better form than the Demons. Melbourne are missing Jesse Hogan and they’re struggling to score points. We would back the Saints here.
Best bet: Saints WIN ($2.25)
Value bet: Saints 1-39 ($2.60)
