Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn Preview
Venue: Adelaide Oval
Last time they met: Port Adelaide defeated Hawthorn 108-86, Round 21, 2015.
Port Adelaide ($2.60)
The Power look to keep their slim final hopes alive as they take on the Hawks at home. Port have a good record against the Hawks as of late, winning the last 2 encounters. In what should be a tight contested match with tackling pressure, Port Adelaide are ranked 2nd in the AFL for tackles, while the Hawks are 4th.
The rested Hawks head to Adelaide for a clash with the Power on Thursday Night Football. With Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge back from injury, the Hawks are just hitting their peak performance. The key for the Hawks will be containing the Power’s small forward line, as the Hawks match up poorly against the likes of Wingard, Young and the Gray brothers.
Prediction: Port at home in a close game. Power by 3.
Best Bet: Port 1-39 ($3.05)
Geelong vs Sydney Preview
Venue: Simonds Stadium
Last time they met: Geelong defeated Sydney 95-63, Round 19, 2015.
The Cats are back after the bye and a shock loss to St Kilda. Geelong has a great run home to the finals with 4 games at Simonds and only 2 road trips to Brisbane and Perth. Watch for Tom Hawkins to enjoy some space with the absence of Ted Richards. He kicked 4 goals in the last matchup between these sides.
Sydney will be ruing their chances after losing on the last kick of the game against the Bulldogs. For the Swans, two losses this year have come after the siren (Richmond) and 6 seconds before the siren (Bulldogs). Sydney haven’t won since 2011 at Simonds Stadium and in the last three matches the Cats have comfortably beaten them.
Prediction: Geelong at home will be to strong by 16 points.
Best Bet: Geelong 1-39 ($2.05)
GWS Giants vs Collingwood Preview
Venue: Spotless Stadium
Last time they met: Collingwood defeated GWS 119-77, Round 11, 2015.
GWS Giants ($1.08)
The Giants have never beaten the Magpies in their 4 clashes since joining the competition. At home this year the Giants have been unstoppable as they have defeated the Hawks, Bulldogs and Swans by large margins.
The Magpies will be tested this week as they play the Giants in Western Sydney. This week former Giant Adam Treloar will face his old side that drafted him. Interestingly, forward Travis Cloke has kicked 14 goals in 3 games against the Giants. Collingwood are ranked 3rd in the AFL for tackles, while the Giants are 17th.
Prediction: The Giants are creating a fortress at home and should beat the Magpies. Giants by 30
Best Bet: Collingwood +46.5 ($1.92)
Gold Coast vs Brisbane Preview
Venue: Metricon Stadium
Last time they met: Brisbane defeated Gold Coast 107-94, Round 4, 2016
Gold Coast ($1.20)
The Suns finally broke their 10 game losing streak as they smashed the Saints at home. Gold Coast will be looking for revenge after they lost to the Lions in Round 4 this year. Both these teams are ranked at the bottom for disposals per game.
Brisbane’s only win of the year came against the Suns in Round 4. This game is the Lions grand final in what has been a dismal year for the club. In a positive, the Lions are blooding some new talent this year and hopefully they can keep them at the club long term.
Prediction: This could be an upset but the Suns just have better talent. Gold Coast by 12.
Best Bet: Brisbane +30.5 ($1.92)
Western Bulldogs vs Richmond Preview
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Last time they met: Western Bulldogs defeated Richmond 85-66, Round 2, 2015.
Western Bulldogs ($1.21)
What a great win by the Bulldogs in Sydney to keep their top four chances alive. The Dogs run home to the finals includes 5 games at Etihad Stadium and probably explains why they are ranked 1st in the AFL for disposals. If they get a home final at Etihad, they will be hard to beat.
The Tigers unlikely finals hopes ride on this game in a disappointing season for the club. In the last 5 games against the Bulldogs, Jack Reiwoldt has kicked 19 goals. Trent Cotchin also enjoys playing the Dogs with 34+ disposals in 3 of the last 5 games.
Prediction: Bulldogs easily by 30 points.
Best Bet: Bulldogs -28.5 ($1.92)
Melbourne vs Fremantle Preview
Venue: TIO Stadium
Last time they met: Fremantle defeated Melbourne 108-54, Round 22, 2015.
The Demons matched the Crows last week but in the end the better side won. Melbourne haven’t enjoyed playing the Dockers as they have lost their last seven matches.
After three wins in a row the Dockers were outclassed by the Magpies last week. Lachie Neale is having a best and fairest season as he leads the league in disposals (459). The key for the Dockers is getting goals from their small forward line.
Prediction: Melbourne have more to play for, Demons by 6
Best Bet: Melbourne 1-39 ($2.05)
Carlton vs Adelaide Preview
Last time they met: Adelaide defeated Carlton 99-90, Round 10, 2015.
The Blues have fallen to 14th on the ladder after a great start to the 2016 season. This week the Blues gameplan should be to win possession and keep the ball from the Crows. The Blues just don’t have the firepower for a shoot-out kind of game.
The Crows are flying as they have won 6 straight games and are well positioned for the top four. They are currently ranked 1st in the AFL for points per game, whereas the Blues are ranked 17th. With Rory Laird back from injury and Rory Sloane racking up tackles and disposals, the Crows are a difficult team to play at the moment.
Prediction: The Crows are flying, Adelaide by 33 points.
Best Bet: Adelaide -31.5 ($1.92)
West Coast Eagles vs North Melbourne Preview
Venue: Domain Stadium
Last time they met: West Coast defeated North Melbourne, 80-55, Prem Final 2015.
West Coast ($1.43)
In a battle between 7th and 8th, the Eagles will be keen to separate from the pack that are chasing the 8th spot on the ladder. The Eagles are ranked 3rd in Points Per Game and ranked 1st in the AFL for Hitouts per game. However, without Nic Naitanui they will attempt to contain Todd Goldstein.
North Melbourne ($2.95)
The Roos have lost three in a row and travel to Perth for another huge test of their finals credentials. Without Nic Naitanui look for Todd Goldstein to dominate the ruck, he had 41 hitouts in the Roos last game against the Eagles.
Prediction: West Coast at home by 12 points
Best Bet: West Coast 1-39 ($2.10)
Essendon vs St Kilda Preview
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Last time they met: St Kilda defeated Essendon 109-63, Round 9, 2016.
Last week the Bombers fell to the Eagles in Perth however they did show something for the first 2 quarters. Essendon are currently 3rd in the AFL for disposals which shows that their gameplan is to keep the ball off the opposition.
St Kilda ($1.11)
The Saints were disappointing last week as they were outplayed by the Suns on the Gold Coast. Josh Bruce loves playing the Bombers as he has kicked 5 goals in each of the last three games against them.
Prediction: St Kilda surely can’t lose this one. Saints by 50 points.
Best Bet: St Kilda 40+ ($1.83)
