2018 T.J Smith Stakes – Preview and Tips
This 1200m event is now the Autumn’s richest sprint race after a significantly improved prizemoney increase when The Championships rolled into town. In recent years it’s been dominated by sprinting legends Chautauqua, Lankan Rupee and Black Caviar. Can Redzel add his name to the T.J Smith Stakes honours board?

Based on form, credentials and class, Redzel should command all the attention from punters this Saturday. The question is: how low will his odds drop by race time? Can he add his name to the T.J Smith honours roll? I think he can.
In Her Time is the second of the ‘big three’ in this race. Her form is great, she’s a last start winner of The Galaxy from two weeks ago and looks primed and ready to give Redzel a real challenge.
Brave Smash the Darren Weir runner has been on the improve all season. He only got pipped by a nostril-hair to Redkirk Warrior in the Newmarket a few weeks back. He definitely has the class and the speed to make a go of it in this years T.J Smith. With an SP of $7.00, that’s good enough for me.
The mare English is an honest type and usually runs well on the Sydney tracks. She won’t mind the wet, though, with a wide barrier, it will be interesting to see whether Sam Clipperton rides her back, and then cuts the corner on the inside rail. You can still be lengths off the leader and still win it. as Chautauqua has shown over the last three runnings of the T.J Smith.
Global Glamour is another classy type. I’d always considered her to be better over a mile (with two Group 1 wins at 1600m), though in recent times, she has raced between 1200 and 1400m. A good run in the Canterbury Stakes to Happy Clapper, but the speed will be far hotter here.
Two horses I do quite like further down the grade are Missrock and Showtime. Both displayed good form down in Melbourne earlier in the Autumn but would need to be at a notch higher to be considered genuine place chances in this race.
Redzel should be too good for this lineup, though In Her Time will be pressing hard. My favourite sprinter of the season is the Victorian Brave Smash. A pretty good line-up of three I’d say. If all three get into the top slots, you can bet the trifecta won’t pay a lot.
Redzel, In Her Time, Brave Smash.
I’ll go with Missrock at $61, with Damien Oliver aboard.
