2018 Stradbroke Handicap – Preview and Tips
As mentioned in my preview of the Queensland Derby, race day this Saturday looms with trepidation for Doomben officials. Already, the card is cut to eight races. Wet weather is looming on the horizon, and the track is suffering under a heavy schedule with Eagle Farm not being accessible. Let us hope that the feature race on the Queensland Winter Carnival: the Stradbroke Handicap – does not suffer as a result.
Deposit $50 and start with $250.
We recommend betting with William Hill on Horse Racing this Saturday. If you’re looking for a new bookmaker, Bet for Free has a special offer for you when you join and deposit over $50.

For this years Stradbroke, It would be difficult to ignore Impending as a back to back winner of this race, and also after winning the Kingsford Smith two weeks ago. He won that race from an impossible draw, but he’s drawn a lot closer here. He’s my pick.
From the inside draw, Champagne Cuddles will attract a lot of punting interest and should be there or thereabouts. She has a lightweight and a top jockey aboard.
Santa Ana Lane cannot be discounted. His run in the Goodwood to win from an impossible position had to be seen to be believed. Already a two-time Group 1 winner over the distance, he’s more credentialled than most of this field. If he gets the breaks on this tight course, we could see another barnstorming finish.
Of the others, The Monstar‘s win at his last start encouraged his connections to line up here. If he got up to win, the house will come down, especially for apprentice Skye Bogenhuber. Not without a chance.
The Newcastle colt Perast was touted as being a top three-year-old earlier in the season. Both he and his stablemate The Mission were 100/1 chances in the Golden Rose at the beginning of Spring, but the odds shortened when he came to Melbourne and raced creditably during the Caulfield Cup carnival; winning the Guineas Prelude and placing 5th in Mighty Boss‘s Guineas. Has won his last two starts at Doomben, and looms as a prospect. Will probably be the race leader.
He’s the horse with the form and will be a deserving favourite. I’ll stick with Impending. The filly Champagne Cuddles has the top jockey Corey Brown onboard, carries a lightweight, and can fly from the clouds. She’s my second pick. I do like the way Perast leads from the front, but he’s up against a good field here and could get swamped on the line. Hence my third pick.
Impending, Champagne Cuddles, Perast
At $14 SP, you can’t go past Group 1 winner Santa Ana Lane.
