It’s understandable that when compared to the previous Oaks races held earlier this season, the Queensland Oaks is very weak on star power.

Only Victorian filly Aloisia brings much-needed class to the race as a Group 1 winner (Caulfield, Thousand Guineas), who has been up for a very long time I might add. Having raced at Doomben last season as a juvenile, and placing second in the Group 1 J.J Atkins Stakes, she has the credentials to do well here. She flew home late in the South Australian Oaks three weeks ago and is well primed for this. Neither her past riders Mark Zahra nor Luke Nolen are involved, this time Queensland jockey Damien Browne gets the gig.

Sheezdashing was a placegetter in the recent South Australian Oaks, and on that form looks like a good thing. However, dig a bit deeper and you’ll find a filly that’s only won once (a maiden), plus a handful of placings in minor company. I’m not quite convinced her $9.50 SP is a fair reflection of her ability, as I believe there are better prospects lining up. Happy to be proved wrong, but..

Savacool was another who raced over in Adelaide and was just in behind the placegetters. I think she’ll be better off for that run, but I’m unsure whether that race is the right form-line to follow for this weekend. Still, at $8.00 for an SP that represents good value.

South Australian Oaks

Recent hall of fame inductee Chris Waller has a number of fillies entered for this race. None more promising than the High Chapparal filly Youngstar, winner of the Magic Millions Roses at her last start. After an erratic period as a juvenile and early three-year-old, Youngstar has finally clicked on to this game called racing, and is making up for lost time. Could turn into a promising mare next season, and will start favourite this Saturday.

Another Dollar did well to chase Youngstar home in the Roses, and could well be in the placings again judging by that race, and also her overall form, which is impeccable. She’s never been out of the money in her race day appearances and I expect the same to happen this Saturday. In my first three.

Magic Millions Roses

Outside of this bracket of horses, I can’t really suggest any probables, maybe with the exception of Kiwi visitor and Pierro bred filly Terra Sancta. She does get back in her races and can get the distance, having run reasonably well in the New Zealand Oaks back in March. She’s won her last two races in Queensland since coming over from NZ a few weeks back, and trainer Tony Pike wouldn’t rate her a chance if he didn’t think she was capable. I think she is.

Winner:
I’ll go with the Waller trained Youngstar, with Aloisia and Another Dollar filling the placings.

Trifecta
Youngstar, Aloisia, Another Dollar

Best Roughie:
At $16 SP, get some money on Terra Sancta if you know what’s good for you.
