2018 Goodwood Handicap – Preview and Tips
A huge field of 20 runners. It could be a lottery in a field this big. The Goodwood Handicap has thrown up numerous outsiders in its history. Are we going to see a repeat, or will it boil down to a two-horse war betweenVega Magic and Viddora? Local South Australian’s reckon it will be the latter.

This years Goodwood Handicap features 20 runners. Some have said it’s the equivalent of a lottery. Let’s look at a couple of interesting pointers about the race.
Some horses are coming off very lengthy breaks. 6 weeks, 2 months, some without a lead-up trial even. It wouldn’t surprise me if an outsider caused a boilover on Saturday, as this race has had a habit of gallopers coming in at long odds to pick up the prize. So it’s not just a two-horse war between the two likely favourites: last year’s winner Vega Magic and local mare Viddora.
With a 20 horse field, outside barriers will discount some gallopers right out of play. Godolphin’s Viridine, Secret Agenda and form horse Stellar Collision are all so wide they could be heading into the next postcode. All three are quite capable, but they’d need to produce something special to win.
Those with a soft draw include Darren Weir’s Voodoo Lad, the Kiwi visitor Ferrando, old-timer Flamberge and wet tracker Thronum. Landing a soft inside draw is only as good if you take advantage of being up on the speed and cutting the corner. Thronum, in particular, will be wanting to make amends for his late scratching in last weeks Doomben 10000 after banging his head pre-start. If the track is a Soft 5 or worse, he comes into the reckoning.
Of the other contenders with a possibility of a chance, Santa Ana Lane, Missrock, Supercash and Steel Frost all have credentials, and on their day are quite capable.
But the lightweight Mica Lil who finished third in the Ubet Classic last start meets one of her rivals Secret Agenda 4kgs better off in the Goodwood Handicap. She is a definite prospect based on that prior run.
I’ll go with the local mare Viddora to pick up her second Group 1 victory, then I’ll put Thronum into second, and Mica Lil for another third placing.
Viddora, Thronum. Mica Lil.
My best roughie is the Kiwi Ferrando who has very good form back in NZ and comes in with an SP of $41. Get on it!
