2018 Doomben 10000 – Preview and Tips
It’s a quality field, featuring no less than seven Group 1 winners! The track is likely to be on the softer side of heavy, while the distance is shortened from the previous 1350 metres standard, down to 1200 metres. As a result, many of these are using the Doomben 10000 as a prelude toward The Everest in a few months time.

12x13 12. In Her Time (8), J: C Brown, W: 56.5 Kgs, 3.70

Despite the Doomben 10000 being shortened by 150 metres off the top of the back straight, horses with inside barrier draws appear to hold the key. The sweeping turn before the home straight catches out many outside runners, so for favoured runners Le Romain and Care To Think who are drawn wide, they won’t have time nor room to get across toward an inside alley with so many speedsters inside them from the barrier.
The two favourites are likely to be Redzel an In Her Time, and with no Redkirk Warrior, Trapeze Artist or She Will Reign in the field, only a major upset would see these two finish outside of the money.
The Godolphin trained Impending appears to be a major threat to the two aforementioned. He won two weeks back on the same course and distance plus carrying the same weight, and has won in the wet before, taking out last years Stradbroke Handicap. He should be right in this. A race like the Doomben 10000 is not beyond him. Expect his SP to crimp in by race time.
Following an easy win in the Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) two starts back, Most Important finished a gallant second to Impending at Doomben. He could be a danger horse, and I don’t think his SP is indicative of his ability. Keep very safe.
English is another who will enjoy the softer conditions likely to prevail in Brisbane this weekend. A handy mare from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable, she will have a few supporters on race-day, and from an ideal inside draw, expect a bold showing.
Thronum is another who will enjoy a soft/heavy track. Whether he can go with this class field is another matter. Maybe a place bet, or first four?
Houtzen is a quality three-year-old but is drawn out in the carpark for this race. He’d have to have a rocket launcher to get him to an inside position before the first turn. Can’t have.
For me it’s hard to go past the two favourites Redzel and In Her Time. For third I’ll put Impending who seems to be back to winning form.
Redzel, In Her Time, Impending
Considering the state of the track, I’ll go with Thronum who is known as an out-n-out wet tracker. At $26 for an SP, he might not end up at that price by race time, so get on him early.
