The Godolphin filly Alizee was super impressive winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes two weeks back up in Sydney. She made a very good galloper in Champagne Cuddles look very ordinary. It was like watching Serena Williams beat up on a hapless school-girl on centre-court, such was the dominance. On that performance alone, Alizee will start as the outright favourite. Your anchor bet. $2.20
The second favourite is likely to be the Anthony Freedman trained Shoals. The Fastnet Rock filly has had four wins and a second from five starts and is putting together a solid CV. good second behind Booker in the Thousand Guineas Prelude a fortnight ago puts her right in the gun here, plus we think she’ll appreciate the step up in distance to 1600 metres. Mark Zahra will continue his association with this filly. $4.40
I am surprised to see last start winner Booker holding the third line of betting with $6.50 being her starting price. The winner of the Thousand Guineas Prelude on Underwood Stakes Day at the start of the month, Booker has solid form too, with five starts comprising of two wins, two seconds and a third. Based on her previous run, you’d have to respect that form-line, defeating Shoals and favourite Catchy (who is not in this race, she is up against the boys in the Caulfield Guineas), so must rate as a decent chance. $6.50
Another runner to watch is Darren Weir’s filly Leather N Lace. She was the beaten favourite into third in last weekend’s Edward Manifold Stakes, also run over 1600 metres. She only plugged in the straight which suggests an issue either with the distance or the firmer ground. She hasn’t been out of the money yet, and could bounce back. $12.00
The Hayes Dabernig filly Pure Scot might be one to keep a sneaky eye. Shes’ raced seven times for two wins, though her form this campaign is on the scratchy side. A good run from the back in last week’s Edward Manifold Stakes where she came fourth bought her right back into contention for this. My roughie for the race. $26.00
Alizee, Booker, Shoals
Pure Scot $26.00
