Three leading stables out of Sydney each have a pair of contenders locked loaded and ready. Chris Waller brings the fancied Foxplay and French Emotion into the race. Foxplay, as we know, was edged by Winx in the Warwick Stakes earlier in her prep, and though her unplaced run on Caulfield Cup day was a bit troubling, she will prefer the wide open spaces of Flemington. French Emotion ran second in last years Myers Classic, is not without a chance either.
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott turn up to the dance with Global Glamour and Prompt Response. GG is likely to start favourite on Saturday, the former dual Group 1 winning three-year-old from last year (One Thousand Guineas and Flight Stakes) also won the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight ago, and is primed and ready for this.
We don’t often see members of Ron Quinton’s team head to Melbourne, but this time, Dixie Blossoms and Daysee Doom arrive together in company. In fact, the duo ran one-two in the Golden Pendant (Daysee Doom) and Angst Stakes (Dixie Blossoms) a few weeks back, so both are in form, and will find the roomy Flemington track to their liking. Daysee is at good money considering, and she could be my roughie bet for the day.
Last year’s Myer Classic victor I Am A Star returns to defend her crown. After a great win in the Stocks Stakes on Moir Stakes night, she offset that by running dead last in the Toorak. Form is a bit erratic, so take on trust.
The Coolmore Classic (Rosehill) winner Heavens Above is one to keep in mind, though I’m sure she would appreciate some easing of the track. That win, where she beat many of her rivals starting in this race was a superb run. Hasn’t really fired a shot in this new campaign, but it might be a good idea to add her into your wider betting selections.
Another to start at a shorter price is the Anthony Freedman trained filly Shoals. She’s trained on the track, and brings super form into this race. She’ll be up against last years top-three-old Global Glamour, and is sure to be close if the form-guide is anything to go by.
The Group 1 winning mare Silent Sedition is another to be wary of. She’s hardly ever been out of the money in her career to date. Her current prep has recorded two fifths, she can run a mile OK, and is drawn handy at 4. The punters think she might be in with a chance too; SP is $9.00.
One mare coming through the ranks is the Tony McEvoy trained Cool Passion. I watched her run for second in behind Global Glamour in the Tristarc, and her win in a Group 3 at Caulfield on Guineas Day the week before. I’m thinking she could be the bolter in the race, if ever there was one. She’s got a wide alley though, but is helped by the mercurial Tommy Berry who is back in Australia for the big Cup. Good money here, get on it!
