Kennedy Mile, Flemington Tips 1600m
This race was formerly the Emirates Stakes, run over a mile on the fourth day of the Flemington Carnival. Now it is named the Kennedy Mile. The VRC can’t quite keep things as they were.

I haven’t quite wrapped my head around these race and name changes during this years Flemington Carnival. Nothing is ever quite static, is it? The Kennedy Mile was previously the Emirates Stakes run on the fourth day of the Carnival. It’s brought forward a week. And to compound matters, the L.K.S McKinnon Stakes has now been changed to the Emirates Stakes! Confused? You should be! A quality field assembles for this race:
1 TOSEN STARDOM (9), D Weir, D Lane, 58kg, $5.50
2 LUCKY HUSSLER (14), D Weir, B Shinn, 56.5kg, $5.50
3 SENSE OF OCCASION (4), K Lees, C Brown, 56.5kg, $26.00
4 MCCREERY (13), C Waller, B Avdulla, 53.5kg, $20.00
5 TOM MELBOURNE (6), C Waller, G Boss, 53.5kg, $6.00
6 EGG TART (10), C Waller, K McEvoy, 52kg, $6.00

8 OMEI SWORD (8), C Waller, T Berry, 52kg, $20.00

12 ALL OUR ROADS (1), C Waller, J Lloyd, 52kg, $15.00

14 WYNDSPELLE (7), M Kent, C Williams, 52kg, $31.00
So anyhow, this is a WFA 1600m race, which in the last couple of years was won by Le Romain and before that Kiwi galloper Turn Me Loose. In 2017 however, the race is dominated by two runners from the Darren Weir stable, and two from the Chris Waller yard.
Tosen Stardom was an excellent winner of the Toorak Handicap last start, and finally nailed a Group 1 victory to his pinboard. He should be right in this. Last week, Lucky Hussler had the race to suit him at Moonee Valley, with a cut-throat hot speed set up for him by Religify and Burning Front. He would need another dominant on-speed frontrunner to replicate similar conditions.
Chris Waller has a staggering six runners in the field. The consistent but unlucky Tom Melbourne gets another shot at a Group 1, with Glen Boss back from Singapore to ride him. He ran a solid second to Happy Clapper in the Epsom. Egg Tart is a Group 1 winning mare, who is good enough to win this, but will need conditions to suit. Kerrin McEvoy is an added bonus. I quite like the former Kiwi All Our Roads too, and at an SP of $15.00, that is sure to interest a few punters.
The Hayes, Hayes and Dabernig yard have two runners. Shillelagh and Sovereign Nation are both at competitive odds, and are handily drawn with barriers close to the inside. Shillelagh was also nominated for the Myer Classic but looks likely to run in this instead.
If you’re looking at slightly longer odds, take a peek at So Si Bon and the former Kiwi Wyndspelle. Both are quite capable, though it seems Robbie Laing hasn’t quite decided whether So Si Bon should be a miler or a sprinter!
