2017 Australian Open Finals Betting Preview & Tips

Mens Australian Open Final Preview

Odds: Nadal $1.77, Federer $2.05 (as of 28th January 2017)

The mens final in 2017 will be played between two old rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer is aiming for his 18th Grand slam title, while Nadal is close behind currently on 14.

Federer won the Australian Open in 2010 against Andy Murray which was last appearance in the final. He first won the tournament in 2004 against Marat Safin.

Nadal last played in Australian Open final in 2014 against Wawrinka (losing in 4 sets). He’s won the tournament once in 2009 and runner-up in 2012 and 2014.

Roger Federer – Road to the Final

Roger Federer entered the Open as a $19 favourite to win tournament. He cruised through the early rounds and knocked over 10th seed Thomas Berdych in the third round. He followed that win by defeating fifth seed Nishikori in a 5 set battle. He then won the quarterfinal in 3 sets. Federer led two sets to none against fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the semifinal and ended up winning in 5 tough sets.

Rafael Nadal – Road to the Final

Rafael Nadal started the tournament as a $13 favourite to win the 2017 Australian Open.
Nadal has beaten quality opponents during the open, including third seed Milos Raonic in three sets. He defeated sixth seed Gail Monfils in 4 sets. Nadal survived an epic five hour semifinal against Dimitrov in 5 sets and also played in a 5 set match in the third round.

Prediction

Nadal has a better record over Federer in Grand slam finals and Federer hasn’t beaten Nadal in a Grand slam since Wimbledon in 2007. Nadal won their last meeting in the Australian Open final in 2009. Both players played in gruelling 5 sets during the semifinal, however Federer played first and gets the extra rest.

Based on their head to head record, we’re tipping Rafael Nadal to win the Open in another epic five set match.

Serena Williams – Road to the Final

Just like last year, Serena hasn’t lost a set in the 2017 Australian Open. Serena only dropped three games against Lucic-Baroni in the semifinals.

She lost the 2016 final to Kerber and would love to start the year with a grand slam win over her sister.

Venus Williams – Road to the Final

Venus recovered from an early scare in the first round (she won 7-6, 7-5) to reach the final. She defeated fellow American, Vandeweghe in the semifinals over 3 sets. After losing the first set, Venus dominated the following 2 sets.

Prediction

This is going to be a great final to watch as both sisters know each others game back to front. Overall, Serena has the advantage with an easier run through the tournament and has played less match time in the Melbourne heat. She also holds a better record against Venus in Grand slam finals.
