2016 Men’s Olympic Basketball Betting Tips and Odds
With the Olympics nearly at the halfway point, the Men’s Basketball competition has produced some memorable moments. After Basketball powerhouse USA were taken to the edge by a physical Australian side, as well as just beating Serbia the finish to this competition will be one to watch.
Basketball is a growing international sport and with countries like Australia, Spain, Lithuania, Argentina, France and Croatia boasting a wealth of NBA experience they are all legitimate medal contenders. With such a strong International competition many fans are now wondering if and when the star studded USA team can be beaten after 72 straight International victories.
Argentina v Brazil
Sportsbet have opened up markets with some fantastic odds with no shortage of games to bet on. With Argentina taking on Brazil and an unbeaten Lithuanian side going up against a Spanish team boasting NBA stars including Pau Gasol, Jose Calderon and Ricky Rubio expect some impressive basketball to be on display.
Sportsbet have set the handicap at -2.5 with a price of $1.90 for favourites Argentina and we can’t see this one losing. 2004 gold medallists Argentina should be too strong for Brazil in this one with experienced stars Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni and Luis Scola performing well so far in the tournament. Argentina’s defence has been impressive and they will be looking to bounce back after a tough loss against Lithuania.
How will the Boomers go?
The Boomers found themselves in the media spotlight after winning their first two matches of an Olympic tournament for the first time in history. After the blow out wins the red hot Australian side strapped in for a David and Goliath match up against the USA.
Coming into the Rio Olympics, it was thought this would be the year that the Boomers won a coveted medal that has avoided them for so long. After narrowly losing to the USA, the belief is now that the Australian side can match it with the best and may very well find themselves in a Gold Medal playoff against the USA.
After leading for the majority of the match due to some bruising defence and sharp shooting from Paddy Mills the Boomers looked set to cause one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history until Carmelo Anthony took over the game lighting it up from behind the arc. USA pulled away late in the 4th quarter and have discovered the Boomers are a legitimate threat for the Gold Medal.
Australia possess star power of their own with NBA champions Andrew Bogut, Matthew Dellavedova and Paddy Mills all playing big roles in the sides success so far in the Olympics. With Mills dropping 30 points against team USA including five three pointers expect him to continue his scoring streak as the Boomers look to secure their first Olympic medal. Andrew Bogut has been a core player for the Boomers since being drafted number 1 in 2005. His brutal defence, rim protection and scoring ability will go a long way this year.
With these stars firing for the Boomers they have every chance of finding themselves in a Gold Medal playoff as it looks likely they will finish second in their pool. Although USA is the benchmark and by far the most talented team, they have lost before and they will lose again. Sportsbet have offered odds of $21 for the Boomers to take the Gold Medal and if any team can do it, it’s Australia.
