2015 AFL Finals Preview and Tips

As we head into the first week of AFL finals it’s a good time to preview each team’s chances of making it to the “big dance” on the first weekend of October. I’ll be taking a look at each team individually and how far they can go this year. the The finals match-ups this week are as follows –

Fri Sept 11 6.20pm WST (Qualifying Final)

West Coast Eagles vs Hawthorn Hawks @ Domain Stadium

Sat Sept 12 1.20pm WST (Qualifying Final)

Fremantle Dockers vs Sydney Swans @ Domain Stadium

Sat Sept 12 7.20pm EST (Elimination Final)

Richmond Tigers vs North Melbourne Kangaroos @ MCG

Sun Sept 13 3.20pm EST (Elimination Final)

Western Bulldogs vs Adelaide Crows @ MCG

Fremantle Dockers

Finishing atop the AFL ladder for 2015 although haven’t been in great form of late. They welcome back their stars this week after resting players against Port Adelaide in round 23. They take on a Sydney Swans outfit who have just sustained a very unfortunate injury to key midfielder Kieran Jack. I see Freo accounting for the Swans comfortably and will advance to the first Preliminary Final. If everything goes to script they will match up against either Hawthorn or West Coast, both frightening match ups. If they do happen to win their Prelim against the Hawks or Eagles (whoever it may be) they will fly to Victoria to face the other. I can’t see them knocking off the reigning premiers at the MCG so their only hope of their first premiership is to face West Coast in the GF.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $4.25

Runner Up $3.75

Preliminary Final $2.25

Semi Final $5.00

Win or lose this week they are going to be up against Hawthorn or West Coast in a Prelim. Too tough an ask even for the top side.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated in Preliminary Final $2.25 with Sportsbet.

West Coast Eagles

West Coast locked in second spot with a win of St Kilda in round 23 and will face Hawthorn on Friday night. These two clubs battled it out in round 19 which saw the Hawks win by 14 points in the wet. The Eagles were without star ruckman Nic Naitanui that night and he could be the difference. If the Eagles win they will progress to the second Preliminary Final. If not, they will match up against the Western Bulldogs or Adelaide Crows at home and take on Freo in the Prelim.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $4.25

Runner Up $3.15

Preliminary Final $2.75

Semi Final $4.50

Their hardest game is this week and if they beat the Hawks I see them qualifying for the Grand Final. If they lose they will likely face Freo in a Prelim which they can win and qualify anyway.

Recommended: Win Premiership $4.25 with Sportsbet.

Hawthorn Hawks

Hawthorn are arguably the best side in the competition but a final in WA versus West Coast is a tough ask. If they don’t win this week it’s likely they will have to fly back to WA a fortnight later for a Prelim. If they win this week they can almost lock in the premiership.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $2.60

Runner Up $4.30

Preliminary Final $2.65

Semi Final $7.50

They are deservedly favourites to take out the Premiership and it’s tough to tip against them. They shouldn’t have a problem getting to the Prelims and will play Freo, Sydney, Richmond or North Melbourne. I can see all teams potentially being able to challenge them.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated Preliminary Final $2.50 with William Hill.

Sydney Swans

It’s tough to see them challenging for the premiership this year especially with the recent knee injury to Kieran Jack. They face Freo at Domain Stadium and they are at risk of going out in straight sets. They’ll be taking on either Richmond or North Melbourne and both teams are capable of winning at the SCG. They have to win this week to be a hope.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $8.00

Runner Up $5.00

Preliminary Final $1.80

Semi Final $3.75

Sydney will have to take on Richmond or North Melbourne at the SCG if they lose this week. If that ends up being Richmond I think they may be gone next week.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated Semi Final $3.75 with Sportsbet.

Richmond Tigers

Richmond take on North Melbourne again after facing off last week. North Melbourne rested 11 players and Richmond easily dealt with them after a shaky first half. Both teams are tough to tip at the best of times and the winner will likely take on Sydney at the SCG. If Richmond do win they have a great chance to make a Preliminary Final as Sydney are definitely beatable, even at their home ground. Richmond can match it with Hawthorn at their best so if the Hawks can knock off West Coast they will play the Prelim in Melbourne and have a chance to qualify for a Grand Final.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $17.00

Runner Up $8.50

Preliminary Final $5.00

Semi Final $3.00

Elimination Final $2.30

As I stated above the Tigers are a tough team to catch but I do see value of backing them to go deep in this finals series. They have beaten Freo, Hawthorn and Sydney this year and can do it again if they bring their best.

Recommended Bet: Runner Up $8.50 with William Hill.

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have been the surprise packet of the 2015 season and I doubt many people could have predicted a top 8 finish. They take on the Crows at the MCG and both teams are coming off a loss. The winner will take on West Coast or Hawthorn in a Semi Final and that’s as far as these teams can go.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $31.00

Runner Up $18.00

Preliminary Final $7.00

Semi Final $2.50

Elimination Final $2.00

They have played some brilliant football this year but won’t be able to match it with Hawthorn if they end up being their opponent next week. However I do think they can beat West Coast as they did in round 1 and there lies some value in a Preliminary Final Elimination.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated Preliminary Final $7.00 with Sportsbet.

Adelaide Crows

There has been some hype around the Crows lately with some arguing they are the in-form team of the competition. That was before their loss to Geelong on the weekend. I believe they will be eliminated this week however if they do knock off the Bulldogs they will have to play West Coast or Hawthorn at their home grounds. No chance.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $21.00

Runner Up $18.00

Preliminary Final $8.00

Semi Final $2.50

Elimination Final $1.80

Adelaide is a team that can beat anyone on their day but I have seen enough to think the Bulldogs will get the better of them.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated Elimination Final $1.80 with Sportsbet.

North Melbourne Kangaroos

The Kangaroos are coming off a loss to Richmond but welcome back half their team this week. If they can get past Richmond a match at the SCG looms. A tough ground for their game-style so I can’t see them going further than the Semis.

Stage of Elimination

Win Premiership $41.00

Runner Up $12.00

Preliminary Final $8.00

Semi Final $3.00

Elimination Final $1.58

They will probably be gone this week but $1.58 for Saturday elimination doesn’t excite me. I don’t think they will get past Sydney or Freo if they do win this week.

Recommended Bet: Eliminated Semi Final $3.00 with Sportsbet.

Sportsbet is offering a $25 free bet for new account deposits of $10 and William Hill $100 in free bets for a $30 new account deposit.

Good luck if your team remains and enjoy the AFL finals for 2015!
